Tonight, we dedicate a whole hour on a musical genre that is near and dear to our hearts: punk rock. This is an often misunderstood music form associated with disgruntled suburban white kids, but tonight, you’ll learn how punk rock has been an important part of liberation for Asian and Pacific Islanders here and abroad.

Next week, Aklasan Records presents an amazing Filipino punk showcase in San Francisco. We’ll hear from Josh Castro and Rupert Estanislao who run the label with a lot of passion. You’ll also hear from APEX Contributor Puck Lo who interviewed Yumi Lee, a one-time avid zine maker who is now the guitarist for punk band In School from New York.

Community Calendar
On Saturday, July 12 taiko artist and choreographer Melody Takata’s integrates movement, text, projection, and music in this new work called Shadow to Shadow. She explores the nature of legacy in a rapidly changing cultural landscape. There are two shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Running from July 12 to August 2, Bindlestiff Studio presents The Guerrillas of Powell Street by Rody Vera, a play about Filipino veterans from World War II connected by a single dream – to return to the homeland to be buried.

On Tuesday, July 15 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Modern Times Bookstore Collective in San Francisco, members of the LaborFest Writers will read their work on the theme Fighting for Survival – From Rockefeller to the Tech Titans featuring Nellie Wong, Alice Rogoff, Margaret Cooley, Keith Cooley, Jerry Path, Susan Ford, Phyllis Hollliday, and Richard Chen.
