10/14/10 Live music featuring performers of the diaspora

This week on Apex Express, we highlight Keep Her Safe, Please! Jakarta 1998, a new work of dance and music drawing on Chinese and Indonesian traditions inspired by the conflicts in Indonesia in 1998 and the universal struggle of immigrants. Wan-Chao Dance, Gadung Kasturi Balinese Dance and Music, HEI GU Chinese Percussion Ensemble, and Midiyanto present this work.

Also, we celebrate 26 years of the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, with the premiere of PURI 5: “SPoRA,” a multidisciplinary new piece that will explore the themes of migration and the Asian diaspora within a context of international war through music, vocals and spoken word by renowned Korean percussionist Dohee Lee with performances by local and international musicians Van-Anh Vanessa Vo and Hiroyuki Jimi Nakagawa.

We will feature in studio music from both shows live on Apex Express!
